Waste management practices that qualify for Golden Heart Green include:
- Composting. This can include but is not limited to food waste, BPI certified disposable flatware/silverware/containers, manure, leaves, animal bedding, paper, cardboard, or other organic waste. This can be done on-site or in conjunction with a local hauler, non-profit, or farmer. This should be a consistent practice throughout the summer, but seasonal composting is allowable.
- Food waste diversion. Includes all practices that divert food waste from the landfill other than composting as covered above. This includes donation to farmers, mushers, or organizations such as Waste Me Naught for animal feed or anaerobic fermentation. Your diversion should be a consistent practice throughout the summer, but seasonal diversion is allowable.
- Recycling. This can include but is not limited to materials sent to the FNSB Central Recycling Facility (CRF) – plastic, paper, cardboard, non-automotive batteries, electronics, and aluminum cans; materials recycled at places other than the CRF such as glass, steel, copper, other aluminum, automotive / solar storage and other larger batteries, fluorescent light bulbs and more at a number of secondary recycling locations. For example, glass is not accepted at the Central Recycling Facility but can be recycled by Glass Roots Alaska. This should be a consistent and year-round practice. This material can be transported for recycling through a hauling company or drop-off by employees. You can consult Green Star’s FNSB Recycling Guide for locations and materials which can be recycled.
- Reuse. To qualify a practice should include (1) a business reusing items to complete your services and/or (2) promoting reuse among your customers. Acceptable reuse can vary but they must be verifiable and consistent. Examples:
- A beekeeper purchases recovered sugar from Waste Me Naught instead of the grocery store to feed their bees.
- A coffee shop offers discounts to customers who bring a reusable cup instead of a disposable cup.
